I was so excited for this book, and now I just don't know what to think. The motivation to keep turning pages to find out what happens next is still there, but now that it's over, I feel deflated.

This was very much the Lucy, Will, and David show. None of them changed or grew during this book. We didn't get to see any of the interaction between the gangs, and Hillary, that was just poorly done. What an ignominious way for the authors to end such a villainous character. The last Disappointing. The last chapter left me cold. I call BS on this as a cop-out way to end what was a fantastic series.

If you don't have three full books in you, wrap it up with a big finish at two. Trust me, no one will mind. In fact, they'll applaud you for having the good sense to know when to stop while you're ahead!

Write a few short novellas to answer some questions or expand on some area, but don't just fizzle out like this, man. It's depressing. Feb 12, Stacee rated it it was ok Shelves: read-in , edelweiss , skimmidy-skim-skim-skim. This was really disappointing. After the awesome ending from book 2, I was so eager to see what happened next. Granted, it was not what I was expecting, but that's not a good thing.

A lot of it seemed to be a rehashing of material from the previous books. The new direction seemed forced and the crazy character development was used just to force the plot along. The ending chapters were shocking; however, it seemed like it was just out of convenience rather than actually dealing with the problems This was really disappointing.

The ending chapters were shocking; however, it seemed like it was just out of convenience rather than actually dealing with the problems that were created in this book. And the end end?

It seems so abrupt that I thought part of the file was missing it corrupt. This seems to be one of those series that would have been better reconfigured as 2 books. Sep 30, Sharon Mariampillai rated it really liked it Shelves: reads , dystopians , 4-stars , e-books , library-books , romance , sci-fi , tbr-finished , must-read , ya. This was an interesting read. It has to be my second favourite book of the series. I thought the action and the story were great.

I did find some parts a bit annoying because there was not much of the truth being told in some moments. I thought Hilary finally got what she deserved. Also, I thought that book was really good. I am happy for David and Lucy. However, I am sad for what happened to Will.

There were some scenes where I was very emotional. The ending was great. Also, I cannot wait for This was an interesting read. Also, I cannot wait for what happens to the characters and where the story takes them in The Giant. All I can say is I am ready for the ride. Overall, a great read.

Sep 15, Lynn Werckenthien rated it really liked it. I have read a lot of young adult trilogies lately, and to its credit, this one kept me engrossed until the very end. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I will say that all of the main characters end up back in the school for one final time. Like the first two, there is a lot of violence and mature content--the violence done by the kids to one another can be very disturbing. Nonetheless, I was overall pleased with the ending, and the final line of the book has stuck with me for a couple I have read a lot of young adult trilogies lately, and to its credit, this one kept me engrossed until the very end.

Nonetheless, I was overall pleased with the ending, and the final line of the book has stuck with me for a couple days now, leaving me wondering. Oct 27, Caitlin marked it as to-read Shelves: to-review.

Loved the first two books. Hope this one is just as good if not better. Oct 29, Josiah rated it it was ok. Authors Lex Hrabe and Thomas Voorhies clearly put effort into giving their Quarantine trilogy a meaningful finish, and the series deserved it. Featuring some of the grittiest, most disturbing content of its era in young-adult literature, Quarantine is a beautiful creation nonetheless, a determinedly flowering shrub growing amidst the shattered glass and rancid remains of the atrocities committed in the bloodstained halls of McKinley High School since the day the teachers all died gruesome Authors Lex Hrabe and Thomas Voorhies clearly put effort into giving their Quarantine trilogy a meaningful finish, and the series deserved it.

Featuring some of the grittiest, most disturbing content of its era in young-adult literature, Quarantine is a beautiful creation nonetheless, a determinedly flowering shrub growing amidst the shattered glass and rancid remains of the atrocities committed in the bloodstained halls of McKinley High School since the day the teachers all died gruesome deaths and the school went on lockdown, sealing the students off from the rest of the world.

Human nature revealed unthinkable pockets of oozing ugliness in itself as the frightened McKinley teens divided into distinct social gangs to raise their odds of surviving the quarantine, not knowing how long it might last. For the youngest students, it could be years before they outgrew puberty and "graduated" to be phased out of infection in the outside world, and years of surviving the un-policed horrors of McKinley was no sure bet for even the most popular or well-connected among them.

But now David is free, escaped from the deathtrap school at the end of the first Quarantine book, The Loners , and his younger brother Will improbably survived the vengeance of rival gangs and his own debilitating epilepsy to join David in graduating at the end of the second book, The Saints.

Will's ability to elude being murdered by enemies inside McKinley heralded greater reward than he would have dared dream when he discovered that contrary to firsthand reports in The Saints , David is alive.

That brings us two-thirds of the way to everyone we're invested in making it safely out of McKinley, but Lucy remains stranded in the den of horrors without a single ally left, and there's no timetable for her graduation. David and Will's panic over Lucy's perilous confinement elevates when they learn she's pregnant, isolated within the nightmarish school with a defenseless baby growing in her, while Hilary stalks the halls in an obsessive hunt for bloody revenge against her.

Lucy's pregnancy could not have come at a more distressing time. With the news that his baby son is scheduled to take his first breath outside the womb in less than nine months, Will chafes against David's directive that they bide their time waiting for Lucy's graduation, hoping she and her vulnerable fetus can survive until then. Now that they've phased out of infection, David and Will are fully susceptible to the virus carried by the McKinley teens, and even airtight gas masks would only buy them a few days to slip back into the school, locate Lucy, and evacuate her before they all die.

Once the filters on the masks gave out, David and Will would suffocate or die from the infection, and that would be no help to Lucy. But with his child in utero at risk, Will evades David and make his way back into the contaminated school, reversing the typical migration pattern of graduated students. As sick as David is at the idea of reentering the hellish inferno of suffering and death that McKinley has degraded into, he won't stand by and let Will die on his mission to save Lucy.

Strapping on a gas mask of his own and packing an extra filter for Will, David returns to ground zero of the infection that has ravaged a nation, again a helpless prisoner in the walls of his own high school. Rules about food drops have changed since the crazed free-for-alls they used to be, but more comprehensive management by the parents outside has only served to push the brutality underground, into the fetid recesses of the school where parental regulation can't touch it.

McKinley is worse than when he was trapped here before, David dolefully realizes: the teens have degenerated physically, emotionally, and psychologically, their warped consciences inhibiting them from fewer heinous acts they would never have entertained in their right minds.

Thoughtless murder and deviant debauchery have become passe, but no one in the school is more unhinged these days than Hilary, who lusts for savage vengeance against everyone who marginalized her in the aftermath of her glory days as head of the Pretty Ones gang. Hilary is especially preoccupied with getting payback against Lucy, and now that she's lucked into perhaps the only loaded firearm left in the school, she greedily pursues her avenue to revenge.

It's a sneak offensive by Hilary that leads to Lucy being taken in by the Burnouts, addled druggies who load up constantly with homemade psychedelic brews to numb themselves to the vicious realities of McKinley. The Burnouts are disillusioned with life, seeking only escape from depression, and they can show Lucy how its done if she wants to get in on the action.

Lucy has much to desire escape from in the years she's been detained in McKinley High, and the lure of mind-altering intoxication is powerful. Even if Will can find her while her baby still lives, what hope is there of getting out of the school before Hilary or some other psychopath or gang of degenerates tortures and kills them? Our protagonists have made it so far to be murdered shy of the finish line. David and Will have rolled the dice and taken an enormous chance for the sake of Lucy and her baby, but will the four of them escape McKinley High School alive?

The Burnouts is considerably shorter than the first two Quarantine novels—almost one hundred fifty pages less than The Loners , more than a hundred pages less than The Saints. That's somewhat unusual for the concluding volume of a trilogy, since the last book usually requires so many loose story threads to be tied up neatly and thoughtfully.

I suppose what is missing from The Burnouts that lengthened the earlier volumes is the deeper emotional connection so patiently and delicately constructed in The Loners and The Saints.

Despite appalling, aberrant gore in the stories, the human spirit's faint yet persistent luminosity of hope was carefully nurtured every now and then as a glistening counterpoint to McKinley's ubiquitous evil, like a crystalline icicle refracting rays of light into brief showers of rainbow on the ceiling of a monster's cave.

For every dozen scenes that turned my stomach and made me want to close the book for good, there might be one scene that snatched my breath away with its hopeful beauty, scenes I treasured all the more because of how few and far apart they were in the series. The Burnouts captures some of the feeling of the first two-thirds of the trilogy, but those unexpected celebrations of humanity's indomitable splendor are what raised the first two books from intense, hardcore violence novels to gorgeous works of art, and their absence seems to partly account for the relative brevity of The Burnouts.

For the end of a superb trilogy, this book feels a little rushed and unfinished, but I'd consider giving it two and a half stars. There's some quality writing in it, and the desolation of McKinley High as it descends to depths of depravity unimaginable to the students before the quarantine is presented convincingly. Any survivors will ultimately exit McKinley scarred by the horror show of life on the inside, witness to daily and sometimes hourly acts of sociopathic cruelty that would be denounced by all but the most demented civilizations.

The abominations endured by McKinley's conscienced remnants are "a wound that would not close. It wouldn't even scab over. It stayed wet and skinless and raw to the slightest touch. For Will, it's Lucy whose presence won't let him forget the good in life even in McKinley, and the promise of a better future once the misery of the quarantine is behind them.

He hadn't imagined it. Her love had felt so real to him. It had kept him going, kept him fighting, through everything he'd faced. Lucy's love had given him a reason to act right, it let him believe that he could be a man. It's what makes the Quarantine trilogy worth reading. They aren't a comfortable experience, but I give these books high marks and my conditional recommendation to readers who can handle a lot of profanity and gross violence.

Well done, Lex Thomas. Well done, indeed. Jun 12, Laura Iacono rated it it was ok. What was even going on with that government truck? He spent so much time in the school without David and managed to survive with questionable actions, but What
