Notables on the sessions included drummer Shelly Manne , trumpet virtuoso Pete Candoli , and pianist and future film music giant John Williams.

More Music from Peter Gun is about as strong as anything on Music from Peter Gunn : "Timothy" may have its weak moments of comic effect, but even it includes some diverting trumpet passages, and none of the rest needs any apology or explanation; "My Manne Shelly" surprisingly isn't given over to Manne 's drumming, though the latter does get spotlighted in some surprisingly subtle playing for a featured number; "Goofin' at the Coffee House" is a fine showcase for Victor Feldman 's vibraphone, Pete Candoli 's trumpet, John Williams ' pianio, and Ronnie Lang 's flute work; "Odd Ball" is an exciting piece of effect music, evoking action and suspense with some virtuoso playing by all concerned; and "The Little Man Theme" is a great workout for Lang 's flute, Ted Nash 's piccolo, Williams ' piano, and Bob Bain 's electric guitar.

Of course, he has to go out of his really cool gumshoe character to do that. To thwart a blackmailing gang he impersonates a bowling team conventioneer looking for a little, a'hem, nighttime company.

And he gets it in the form of a luscious Mara Corday. However, her company includes an uninvited photographer specializing in, shall we say, intimate portraits! It's a trap that's supposed to make Pete's conventioneer a target for blackmail. So what's our hero going to do. It's an offbeat episode with Pete stepping outside his usual sophisticated self to play a kind of slap- happy middle-American. It's also something of an adjustment. Then too, the episode reminds me of the late '50's when bowling was popular, and I managed to knock over a pin now and then, mostly then.

Anyway, there's the usual fisticuffs for action, Shelley Manne for jazzy sound, and movie vet Jackie Coogan picking up a payday. So don't miss it.

Meanwhile, where can this geezer get Ms Corday's private number. Well, I can dream, can't I. Hidden categories: Articles with short description Articles with hAudio microformats All stub articles.
